How Many Years Should My Appliances Last? A Kitchen Appliance Guide.

Admin

Kitchen appliances are among the most expensive home furnishings to replace. Due to this, most homeowners are willing to put-off investing in them until they absolutely have to. If you think one or more of your appliances is on the fritz, however, you might be wondering exactly how long these products are supposed to last. Here, you’ll find information about the expected lifespans of most popular residential kitchen appliances.

Refrigerator

Most refrigerator models, with built-in freezers, are expected to last between 14 and 27 years. This is good news for homeowners, as refrigerators can be among the costliest residential appliances. If you’re tempted to upgrade your family’s refrigerator to a style with all the latest bells and whistles before your old one has gone out, try to think about what you truly need as opposed to just what you want.

Standalone freezer

Standalone freezers, such as those many people keep in garages and basements, typically have 12 to 20-year lifespans. Considering that these appliances are often located in unfinished interior spaces, this is impressive. If you do find yourself with a defunct freezer, though, it won’t cost too much to replace.

Oven with range

Like freezers, oven/range combinations usually last 12 to 20 years. This type of appliance has a wide range of prices, with basic models often costing under $500 and high-end options with custom colors running well over $20,000. No matter what your budget is, you should be able to find an oven/range you love.

Dishwasher

Dishwashers generally have 9 to 11-year lifespans. Since these appliances get a great deal of heavy use, it should come as no surprise that they don’t last as long as some other kitchen necessities. Like oven/range combinations, dishwashers are available at a wide range of price points.

Microwave

Microwaves generally last the shortest time of any common kitchen appliance, requiring replacement in 7 to 9 years. Fortunately, they are also the most affordable of the major kitchen appliances featured here. You can get a basic model from any big box store for around $50.
